At&t and spacex secure fcc approval for $40b spectrum deal

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted conditional approval for at&t and SpaceX to purchase $40 billion worth of spectrum from struggling carrier EchoStar.

Today's decisions put America on the path to releasing approximately 300 megahertz of low- and mid-band spectrum by the end of 2027, solidifying the FCC's concrete plan for securing U.S. leadership in direct-to-device offerings.

at&t will acquire 20 MHz of 600 MHz low-band spectrum and 30 MHz of mid-band 3.45 GHz spectrum, while SpaceX will receive 40 MHz of AWS-4, 10 MHz of AWS-H Block, and 15 MHz of unpaired AWS-3 spectrum.

Improving service and connectivity

AT&T plans to expand 5G and home internet coverage, particularly in rural, remote, and underserved locations, using the additional spectrum. The company will also charge EchoStar lower rates, allowing Boost Mobile to provide better service at a lower cost.

SpaceX will use the mid-band spectrum for its next-generation direct-to-device network, aiming to improve the quality of text, voice, and data services and deliver lifesaving connectivity in dead zones.
