At&t bets big on fiber expansion after lumen acquisition

AT&T is betting heavily on its recent $5.75 billion acquisition of Lumen Technologies' consumer fiber Business to boost subscriber numbers in key markets. The carrier faces a significant challenge: convincing existing fiber-ready homes to actually subscribe.

Fiber penetration remains low in new markets

The deal added approximately 1 million fiber subscribers, expanding AT&T's reach to over 4 million fiber-ready locations across cities like Denver, Las Vegas, and Seattle. However, the company is finding that only about 25% of these homes are currently using the service. This contrasts sharply with AT&T's existing fiber markets, where subscriber penetration hovers around 40%.

This disparity signals a major hurdle. AT&T plans a renewed push into marketing and sales, leveraging its brand recognition and established distribution networks. The company is also focused on bundled service offerings – combining fiber broadband with AT&T phone plans. They believe this strategy will increase customer retention and long-term value.

Currently, fewer than 20% of Lumen's fiber customers also use AT&T's wireless service, compared to roughly half of AT&T's established fiber customers. This presents a substantial opportunity to entice customers from competitors like T-Mobile and Verizon. The cost of switching remains a factor, but AT&T is banking on the combined value proposition.

The company's strategy hinges on overcoming hesitancy. Will consumers embrace the convergence of services, or will they maintain their preferred providers? The next few quarters will reveal whether AT&T can successfully unlock the potential of its fiber investment.
