Oppo and oneplus to hike phone prices amid component cost surge

Smartphone buyers brace for higher costs. Oppo and OnePlus are poised to increase prices on select models starting March 16th, a move driven by soaring memory chip costs and a broader economic climate affecting the entire tech industry.

The companies, closely linked as part of the BBK Electronics conglomerate, will strategically adjust prices on some products, according to reports from Fast Technology. While the exact models affected remain unconfirmed, industry analysts suggest it could include devices from Oppo’s A and K series, as well as some OnePlus handsets. Interestingly, Oppo’s flagship Find and Reno series are reportedly excluded from this initial price adjustment.

This isn't an isolated incident. Xiaomi recently implemented price increases on popular models in China, and Samsung followed suit with its Galaxy S26 series. The starting price of the Galaxy S26 and S26 Plus has increased by $100 compared to their predecessors. The top-tier Galaxy S26 Ultra remained unchanged, but its premium price tag already sits at $1,300.

The underlying cause? A significant surge in the price of Random Access Memory (RAM) chips. This “RAMpocalypse,” as some are calling it, has put pressure on manufacturers already operating on tight margins. Passing these inflated costs onto consumers is the logical, albeit unwelcome, outcome.

The potential consequence? Smartphone shipments in 2026 are projected to decline for the first time in years. Consumers face a stark choice: pay more for roughly the same hardware, or accept a downgrade. The tech market is entering a period of recalibration, and the ripple effects will be felt throughout the year.

This isn't simply a matter of fluctuating market forces; it reflects a deeper challenge for the industry. The quest for innovation continues, but the cost of that innovation is increasingly being borne by the end user.
