T-mobile doubles down: starlink partnership sparks new questions
T-Mobile CEO Srini Gopalan has repeatedly dismissed a potential partnership between the carrier and SpaceX’s Starlink, but a recent conference call revealed a persistent – and surprisingly complex – debate surrounding the possibility.

Strategic shift: superbroadband fuels renewed interest
Just a month after initially rejecting the idea of an MVNO collaboration with Starlink, T-Mobile is now aggressively pursuing SuperBroadband, a 5G fixed wireless access (FWA) service powered by Starlink’s satellite connectivity. This strategic pivot, aimed at bolstering Business customers’ resilience against outages, has reignited speculation about the original, previously dismissed, partnership.
During a Q1 earnings call, LightShed Partners’ Walter Piecyk pressed Gopalan on the matter, highlighting T-Mobile’s recent SuperBroadband announcement. The carrier is already securing contracts with hospitality, retail, healthcare, and oil & gas firms, promising ubiquitous coverage nationwide – a substantial expansion of its reach.
Gopalan, however, remains steadfast, emphasizing the distinction between SuperBroadband and T-Mobile’s Direct-to-Cell (D2C) T-Satellite service, which operates independently in remote areas like national parks. Despite T-Satellite’s limited initial uptake, Gopalan defends its role as a category creator, noting the service’s success in underserved locations.
The CEO’s resistance isn’t simply a matter of principle. He pointedly questioned whether a Starlink-backed MVNO would meet T-Mobile’s criteria for incremental market share acquisition – either through cable distribution or targeting specific demographics. This suggests a deep skepticism about the potential benefits of such a venture.
Deutsche Telekom’s recent discussions regarding a merger with T-Mobile, potentially creating the world’s largest telecom entity, adds another layer of complexity. While Gopalan has publicly shot down cable acquisitions, the proposed mega-merger with Deutsche Telekom continues to raise eyebrows and highlights a strategic shift within the company.
Ultimately, T-Mobile’s focus is firmly on attacking incumbents in fiber and FWA, not becoming one itself. The SuperBroadband initiative represents a calculated move to achieve that goal, leveraging Starlink's capabilities to bolster its existing network and solidify its position as a disruptive force in the industry.
