Spain overhauls energy poverty aid, targeting neediest households
Spain aims to redistribute energy poverty aid
nThe Spanish government has approved a new strategy to tackle energy poverty, with a key change in how families receive aid. Starting in 2026, households with multiple children will no longer automatically qualify for a 42.5% discount on electricity bills due to their family size alone. Instead, they must demonstrate a financial need.n

New criteria for family discount
nCurrently, over 454,000 households receive the social electricity bonus. However, almost 285,000 of these don't show proof of income. The government aims to redirect funds to the most vulnerable by introducing income thresholds linked to the national minimum income reference (IPREM).n
