Movistar plus+ raises prices amid sports streaming push

Movistar Plus+ is betting heavily on sports content, but that strategy comes with a price for subscribers. The telecommunications operator has increased prices on its streaming platform, impacting fiber and mobile plans and dedicated sports packages.

Price hikes hit sports fans

The cost increases, effective immediately, affect several key areas. Motor package subscribers will see a €5 increase, jumping from €15 to €20 per month. The Sports Total package, encompassing Formula 1, MotoGP, and other sports, also rises by €5, now costing €29 monthly.

This escalation follows the recent start of the MotoGP and Formula 1 seasons, a move that aims to capitalize on the growing popularity of motorsport. The company is doubling down on sports as a key draw, alongside football.

The price adjustments coincide with the return of Disney Channel to Movistar Plus+, a development that could attract new subscribers. However, the increased costs may deter some. Movistar is attempting to mitigate subscriber churn by offering existing promotions until they expire, and a limited-time offer of €20 for six months on the Sports Total package and €14 for the Motor package until March 31st with no commitment.

Beyond motorsports, Movistar Plus+ has secured rights to FIBA competitions through 2029, further expanding its sporting offerings. The platform already boasts comprehensive coverage of tennis, including the Indian Wells Masters, and basketball. The company is betting that the breadth of content justifies the price increase. The key question is whether this strategy will resonate with customers, or if the price hikes will ultimately slow subscriber growth.
