Madrid – RTVE, Spain's national public broadcaster, is poised to inject fresh life into the terrestrial digital television (TDT) landscape with the launch of a new thematic channel dedicated to culture. This move, inspired by France's Arte, signals a significant shift in RTVE's programming strategy and positions it as a major player in the evolving media ecosystem.

The channel aims to showcase documentaries, films, and theatrical performances, drawing inspiration from Arte's successful model. RTVE plans to collaborate with European broadcasters, potentially sharing content and expanding its reach. A key element will be the revival of classic productions from Estudio 1, alongside showcasing Spanish cinema, music from Radio 3 and Radio 3 Extra, and performances by the RTVE Orchestra and Chorus.

This isn't a simple upgrade. RTVE is strategically positioning itself against the growing popularity of streaming services. While the new channel might initially prioritize streaming platforms – Movistar Plus+, Orange TV, Vodafone TV, and DIGI TV – a launch on TDT could occur as early as late June. These platforms are already vying for viewers' attention with competitive pricing, including Movistar Plus+'s €9.99 bundle offering football, series, and movies without contracts.
