Spain's military pioneers: 11 women rise to the rank of general

On the International Day of Women (8M), we honor the achievement of 11 women who have reached the highest echelons of the Spanish Armed Forces.

Breaking barriers

From the first female soldiers in 1988 to the present day, these women have consistently demonstrated their ability, dedication, and leadership skills.

A trailblazing path

Patricia Ortega, the first woman to become a general in Spain, paved the way for others to follow in her footsteps. A graduate in agricultural engineering, Ortega served in various roles, including as a captain in the Engineer Corps and later as a general of the Army.

María Begoña Aramendía, María Teresa Gordillo, Loreto Gutiérrez Hurtado, María Luisa Manzanera, María Eugenia Ruiz Hernández, María Rosario Herrera, Elvira Pelet Pascual, María Rosa García Toledano, María Dolores Sánchez Medrano, and María Teresa Llorente Ballesteros are among the select group of women who have broken through the glass ceiling in the Spanish military.

These generals have made significant contributions in various fields, including law, medicine, engineering, and more. Their accomplishments serve as a testament to the growing representation of women in leadership positions within the Spanish Armed Forces.
