6G connectivity expected by 2030: bands and timeline
As we near the dawn of a new decade, the telecommunication sector is already gearing up for the next generation of wireless connectivity - 6G. While it may seem premature to consider the future beyond 5G, the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) is actively working to prepare the necessary spectrum for 6G's arrival.

nA recent white paper from 5G Americas suggested the 7GHz band for 6G use, a recommendation seconded by networking giants Nokia and Ericsson. This frequency range, spanning 7125MHz to 7400MHz, is currently being analyzed by the NTIA. In his 'Winning the 6G Race' memo, President Donald Trump ordered the agency to evaluate the lower 7GHz band, along with setting aside 600MHz of spectrum between 1.3GHz and 10GHz for exclusive licensed use.

nThe NTIA has launched a new website showcasing the progress made on each band being considered for 6G. The front-running 7GHz band currently sits between task eight and nine, with spectrum interference analysis upcoming. In contrast, the 4.4GHz band has completed three tasks, with the fourth looming. The 2.7GHz and 1.6GHz bands are progressing to task five.
nNTIA Chief Administrator Arielle Roth emphasized the importance of identifying spectrum in the 7GHz band, with the final report due in December. Roth also discussed the Spectrum Relocation Fund (SRF), used to pay for spectrum analysis, and the need for detailed pipeline plans and Congressional approval to unlock it.
