Catalonia's busiest road gets high-tech makeover
As part of a bold new plan, the entire 344-kilometer stretch of AP-7 within Catalonia is being transformed into an intensive control corridor.
Launched by the Catalan Department of Transit, the initiative aims to drastically reduce fatalities on the notoriously congested and deadly highway.
Under the revamped system, drivers will encounter more radar units, increased police presence, and variable speed limits adjusted in real-time to minimize accidents.
The AP-7, which connects the French border to the Valencia region, currently sees over 10,000 trucks and 7,000 cars per hour during peak hours, making it the most accident-prone road in Catalonia.
Authorities hope that by installing 10 radar units, including six new mobile ones, and enhancing police patrols, they can cut fatalities on the road in half by 2030.
Radar units will be strategically moved every one to two weeks to hot spots, snapping photos of speeding vehicles and automatically sending denunciation reports without human intervention.
Variable speed limits will also be implemented on 150 kilometers of the highway, with intelligent systems analyzing data from sensors, cameras, and weather stations to adapt the maximum allowed speed in real-time.
These measures come as part of Catalonia's efforts to combat road fatalities, which have disproportionately affected the province of Tarragona in recent years.
With the most intense enforcement focusing on the Calafat to Amposta section, drivers can expect to encounter a range of controls, from radar traps to police patrols, drones, and helicopters.
The overhaul of the AP-7 highway marks a significant shift in Catalonia's approach to road safety, prioritizing technology and increased enforcement to curb reckless driving and reduce the devastating toll of crashes.
