Apple Developing Theft Detection Lock Feature for iPhone
Are you hesitant to use your iPhone in crowded areas, fearing it might be snatched? Android users already have a solution: Theft Detection Lock. Now, Apple is working on a similar feature for iPhones, aiming to protect user data and finances.
iOS 27.2 Beta Reveals 'AutoLock' Feature
Code discovered within the iOS 27.2 beta reveals that Apple is developing a feature akin to Android's Theft Detection Lock. Internally, Apple is referring to this feature as “AutoLock.” This feature will utilize AI and on-device sensors to detect when a phone has been forcefully taken.

How 'AutoLock' Will Work
The system will monitor signals such as:
- Sharp acceleration indicative of a snatch.
- Loss of connectivity with a paired Apple Watch.
- The device remaining unlocked for an extended period.
To prevent false positives, safeguards like biometric authentication will be implemented. If these safeguards are triggered, the lock can be vetoed, ensuring the device isn't locked unnecessarily.

Future Release Anticipated
While the code has been discovered, the feature is still under development. Apple hasn't yet enabled the background locking functionality, possibly to test the underlying technology without immediately locking devices. It is hoped that this feature will be released for the iPhone later this year.
