Apple shuns ai supremacy: embraces third-party chatbots on iphone
Apple is betting
on a different strategy. The tech giant is shifting away from its ambitious, and ultimately unsuccessful, quest to build the ultimate ai assistant. Instead, the company is opening the door to competitors, allowing ai chatbots like ChatGPT and Google's Gemini to reside on iPhones.
Iphone to become ai hub, powered by everyone else
Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is developing an "Extensions" feature for iOS 27, launching at WWDC on June 8th. This feature will enable users to integrate third-party AI chatbots directly into Siri. A dedicated section in the App Store will house these AI tools, similar to the existing app store structure.
Instead of competing with OpenAI and Google on chatbot technology, Apple is positioning the iPhone as the central platform for AI, regardless of its origin. This represents a significant pivot for a company known for tightly controlling its ecosystem. The shift comes after years of struggling to deliver a compelling AI experience with its own offerings.
The move mirrors the existing App Store model, where Apple allows third-party apps to coexist with its own, retaining a 30% cut of subscription revenue. While not a revolutionary change, it acknowledges the limitations of Apple's internal AI development. The company reorganized its AI team last year after failing to meet internal deadlines and promises.
It’s a pragmatic decision. Apple’s initial attempts at building a superior AI assistant consistently lagged behind rivals. Recognizing this, they’re leveraging their hardware and established ecosystem. This isn’t a sudden revelation; it’s the result of a strategic retreat.
The real test will be whether users perceive this shift as a genuine enhancement to their iPhone experience or merely a middleman between them and the AI applications. Apple has admitted it couldn't outpace the competition internally. Now, it's playing to its strengths. And that might be enough.
