Chrome for android gets a bookmark bar – finally!

android users have long coveted a feature present on the desktop version of Google Chrome: the bookmark bar. Now, it’s finally arriving, though with a caveat.

The long-awaited feature is rolling out, but not to everyone.

Version 146 of the Chrome for android app introduces the bookmark bar, mirroring the familiar bar found on desktop browsers. Positioned conveniently below the Omnibox, this addition allows for one-tap access to saved pages, boosting efficiency for power users. The bar extends the same length as the address bar, and a right-facing chevron reveals additional bookmarks and folders.

For those with large-screened android devices – primarily tablets and foldable phones – the bookmark bar will appear automatically. However, the rollout is limited. The feature isn't available on all devices, including the author's own Pixel 6 Pro, despite running the latest version of the Chrome browser. Google intends to expand availability to handsets with standard-sized displays, though a timeline remains unclear.

The bookmark bar offers a significant convenience, streamlining navigation and creating a more consistent browsing experience between desktop and mobile. Users can enable the feature through Settings> Appearance> Show bookmarks bar. Even without the bar, creating bookmarks remains simple: a tap on the three-dot menu, followed by “Bookmarks” and then the star icon, saves the page.

The update represents a tangible step toward bridging the gap between the mobile and desktop Chrome experiences. While the limited initial rollout might frustrate some, this move signals Google's commitment to delivering a more unified browsing experience across platforms.
