Digi's rapid growth masks customer complaints surge

Romanian-based DIGI is experiencing a surge in subscribers, surpassing 10.8 million and closing in on Vodafone in Spain's telecom market. But this growth comes at a cost: customer complaints have skyrocketed, raising questions about the quality of the service.

Digi's subscriber boom coincides with a steep rise in complaints

The low-cost provider’s success hinges on streamlined pricing, but recent data paints a less rosy picture. DIGI’s complaint numbers jumped from 244,507 in 2024 to 389,852 in 2025 – a staggering 59% increase. April 29th alone saw 19,832 incidents in under 24 hours, according to Downdetector. This spike follows DIGI's aggressive expansion of its own mobile network, initiated last year.

The surge isn't an isolated event. Downdetector identifies April, the summer months, and December as particularly problematic periods. The frequency of days exceeding the annual average in complaints has also risen sharply, reaching 36 days in 2025 compared to 22 in 2024, with service interruptions lasting up to seven hours.

DIGI disputes the severity of the situation, claiming to have “no record” of widespread issues and attributing isolated incidents to normal network management. They assert that the increasing complaints are within the normal range given their rapid subscriber growth and subsequent network investments.

However, the numbers tell a different story. The 59% increase in complaints significantly outpaces the 19% growth in subscribers during the same period. This discrepancy suggests a potential strain on DIGI's network infrastructure.

Analysts point out that Downdetector often flags potential problems before the company acknowledges them. “Given the limited impact on the overall customer base, we consider these issues to be within the normal scope of network management,” DIGI stated in a recent announcement. Yet, the rising complaint volume represents a significant challenge for the burgeoning telecom operator.

Meanwhile, Movistar has issued a warning about a sophisticated router-changing scam. This incident adds to the growing concerns surrounding the stability of DIGI’s services. The company’s focus on expansion may have outpaced its ability to ensure consistent service quality.

The company maintains that network quality is constantly improving due to substantial investments made to meet growing demand. But the user experience suggests otherwise. DIGI’s rapid ascent in the Spanish telecom market may be built on a foundation that is struggling to keep pace with its ambitious growth.

The contrast is stark: a rapidly growing customer base alongside a rapidly growing list of grievances. This is a pattern many new entrants face, but the scale of DIGI's complaint increase warrants close scrutiny.

DIGI’s strategy hinges on low-cost simplicity, but the cost to its customers may be higher than they anticipated.
