Google maps gets a fresh look: icon redesign rolls out on android & ios

Google has subtly refreshed its iconic Maps app icon for both Android and iOS, a change many users may have overlooked. The update, rolling out in versions 26.09.06.873668274 for Android and 26.09.5 for iOS, brings a more contemporary aesthetic to the familiar pin.

The familiar pin gets a modern makeover

The most immediate difference? A shift to a blended gradient of Google's signature colors, replacing the previous design's distinct, diagonally arranged colored boxes. The pin itself is also larger, with a proportionally smaller inner circle, resulting in a thinner top ring. This isn't the first time Google has tweaked the Maps icon; early iterations on the original iPhone featured intersecting lines representing roads.

The evolution of the Google Maps icon mirrors the app's own journey. Launched on the first-generation iPhone in 2007, it initially showcased a more utilitarian design.
