Google maps refines location sharing with new floating button

Google Maps is quietly testing a significant update that could streamline how users share their real-time location. The change, spotted in version 26.12.03.884026066, introduces a floating action button that simplifies the process of sharing, potentially replacing the current method of tapping a blue location icon.

Sharing location gets simpler

Instead of navigating menus, users will simply tap the new floating button on the map's main screen. This button will then present a list of apps to choose from for sharing – a notable shift from the existing overlay window.

The update also brings changes to the app's menu, reorganizing options into a grid format with larger icons. Several features, including “Show satellite map” and “Show traffic on map,” have been moved to the settings menu, while “Share trip progress” has been removed.

While the changes are currently limited to a small group of users, the move signals Google's intent to make location sharing a more direct action within the Maps app itself. This contrasts with the current, multi-step process of using apps like WhatsApp or Google Messages.

Apple Maps has long offered a more intuitive location-sharing experience, allowing users to swipe up from the bottom of the screen to share their location. The success of this update remains to be seen, but it represents a clear effort by Google to enhance user convenience.
