New read receipts arrive for beta testers

For those of you testing out the latest version of Google Messages, you've likely noticed a change in how read receipts appear. Google has ditched the old "Double Bubble" design. The new read receipts are now located inside the text bubble in the lower right corner. This updated design uses a single circle to indicate message status. A circle with an ellipsis means the message is sending, a single checkmark means it’s sent, double checkmarks mean it’s delivered and a solid double checkmark means it’s been read. It’s a subtle but useful visual upgrade.

Understanding end-to-end encryption (e2ee)

Security is paramount, and end-to-end encryption (E2EE) is a key feature of Google Messages. Now, it's easier to check if your messages are protected. Simply swipe the text bubble to the left. You’ll see the timestamp of the message and an indicator showing whether it was encrypted. A lock with a line through it signifies that the message wasn't encrypted, while a lock without a line means it was sent via E2EE, ensuring only you and the recipient can read the content. It's a simple way to stay informed about your message security.

Real-time location sharing is coming to google messages

This is a big one! Google Messages is about to get a feature that many users have been requesting: real-time location sharing. Previously, the app only allowed for sharing a static location, which wasn’t very practical. With this new feature, you'll be able to share your live location with contacts. First, you'll need to grant location permissions. Then, you can choose the duration of the sharing – options include 'Recommended For You,' '1 hour,' 'Today only,' 'Custom duration,' or 'Once.'

How real-time location sharing works

When enabled, a banner appears at the top of the chat indicating that live location sharing is active and how much time remains. The feature works even if the recipient doesn't have Google Messages installed. If they do, the link opens in the Google Find Hub app. If not, the link opens in a web browser, displaying your live location. This cross-platform compatibility is a significant advantage. You can easily stop sharing by tapping the banner and selecting "Stop."

What’s new in version 20260220_01_rc00

The new features, including the redesigned read receipts and real-time location sharing, are currently rolling out in Google Messages version 20260220_01_RC00. This version is part of the open beta program, so you might need to join to access these updates. Keep an eye out for the update in the Google Play Store!
