Google simplifies group chats in messages app, removing a step

Google streamlines group messaging in latest messages app update

Hey TechNest readers! Ashley Jones here, and I'm excited to share a handy update from Google. They're making it even easier to create group chats within the Google Messages app. This change, rolling out in version messages.android_20260217_00_RC00.phone.openbeta_dynamic, eliminates a step in the group creation process – a welcome simplification for all of us!

What

What's new? a faster way to start group chats

Previously, starting a group chat involved tapping "Start chat" and then selecting contacts from your list. Now, when you initiate a new chat, the app immediately prompts you with "Anyone else?" after you select the first recipient. This means you can instantly begin adding more members without navigating to a separate "Create group" button. It's a small change, but it adds up to a smoother user experience.

How to access the new feature

Currently, this new UI is available to Google Messages Beta testers. If you're not already part of the beta program, you'll need to sign up. I highly recommend joining beta programs for apps like Google Messages, Phone by Google, and Google Contacts to get early access to new features. You can find instructions on how to join a beta program in the Google Play Store (more on that below!).

Joining google's beta programs

Want to be on the cutting edge? Here's how to join a Google app beta:

  • Open the Google Play Store app.
  • Tap your Profile Icon in the top right corner.
  • Select Manage apps & devices>Manage.
  • Find the app you want to join the beta for.
  • Scroll down and tap "Join the beta."

Keep in mind that popular apps often have limited spots in their beta programs, so you might need to try again later. It's worth the effort, though – you'll get a sneak peek at upcoming features!

The pros and cons of beta testing

Beta testing is a fantastic way to experience new features early. You get first access to what Google is working on. However, there's a trade-off. Beta versions can sometimes have bugs, potentially causing issues with the app's functionality. For example, the Google Messages Beta experienced an outage in August 2025. While these issues are rare, it's something to consider. But for me, it's a worthwhile risk!
