It’s designed to integrate the earth connection directly into the plug itself – something not found in many other countries, like the US or Japan, where grounding is handled through a separate pin.

The Schuko system, originating in Germany, became widespread across Europe for its efficient grounding solution. Spain's electrical regulations mandate a ground connection in all homes, making these little loops fully functional, even if their purpose remains largely unnoticed.

Here’s how they work. When you plug in a Schuko plug, the side loops make contact first, before the main pins deliver power. Unplugging reverses the order. This ensures the earth circuit remains active as long as the device is connected.

This is critical for devices experiencing internal faults. If a appliance, particularly one with a metal casing like a washing machine or refrigerator, develops a short circuit and the casing becomes live, the fault current needs a path to dissipate. The active ground diverts this current safely to the electrical system, triggering the circuit breaker to cut off power automatically. Without this, the current could travel through anyone touching the appliance.

The absence of these loops in plugs from other regions doesn't mean they're less safe. The US, for example, uses a three-prong system where grounding is handled by a dedicated pin on the device. It’s simply a different approach to achieving the same goal: protection.
