Huawei matepad mini: a compact tablet that finally gets the equation right
Mini tablets have always felt like a compromise – convenient but lacking the screen real estate to truly shine. But the Huawei MatePad Mini arrives with a refined design and a thoughtful matte display that suggests a potential turning point.

A more portable experience
The Huawei MatePad Mini addresses a core issue: size. Its 8.8-inch display is nestled within a remarkably compact body measuring 7.82 x 5.01 x 0.20 inches – a noticeable improvement over the iPad mini’s 7.69 x 5.31 x 0.25 inches. And at 9 oz (255g), it’s closer in weight to a large smartphone than its larger tablet counterparts.
A significant factor contributing to this improved portability is the inclusion of a matte screen. While matte displays often sacrifice some image vibrancy, Huawei appears to have largely mitigated this issue. The screen feels pleasant to the touch, resists fingerprints, and reduces glare—a welcome change from the often-slippery surfaces of glossy screens.
Under the hood, the MatePad Mini is powered by the Kirin 9010B chip, a tweaked version of the chip found in the Mate 70 and Pura 80 phones. It’s positioned as a mid-range processor, with multi-thread performance comparable to the 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, but single-core performance lags slightly. Initial testing shows smooth app animations and page loading, though long-term performance remains to be seen.
The Huawei M-Pencil Pro and MatePad Mini Folio cover are available separately, though the lack of a built-in keyboard folio is a missed opportunity. While wireless keyboards are supported, a dedicated case would have completed the package.
Pricing remains elusive, with inflated third-party retailer listings making it difficult to assess. The official global launch happened yesterday, so expect a range, but avoid those early prices. The MatePad Mini’s success hinges on its ability to deliver a compelling experience in a truly portable package. Huawei has addressed the size issue, and the matte display is a step in the right direction.
