Huawei's smart grip: ai innovation survives us sanctions

Despite U.S. sanctions, Huawei continues to innovate, introducing a novel feature called Smart Grip on its latest Mate 80 series phones. This Technology leverages capacitive sensors and 3D ToF sensors to dynamically adjust the user interface based on how the phone is held.

The feature intelligently detects which hand is holding the device and where the user's thumb is positioned. Consequently, the call and notification buttons slide down to meet the user's thumb, eliminating awkward stretches. Shifting the grip also seamlessly repositions UI elements, allowing for effortless access to notifications. The system even recognizes hand dominance, tailoring the interface accordingly.

This capability relies on the Time of Flight (ToF) sensor, which projects an infrared beam to map the user's hand movements. This data is processed on-device by Huawei's Kirin 9030 and 9030 Pro processors, manufactured using SAQP (Self-Aligned Quadruple Patterning), also known as Brute Force, due to restrictions on EUV lithography Technology.

The Kirin 9030 series, built on a 5nm process, represents a significant feat of engineering given the limitations imposed by U.S. regulations. Brute Force, while less efficient than EUV, remains Huawei's only option for producing advanced processors.

The Smart Grip feature is available on the Huawei Mate 80 Pro, Mate 80 Pro Max, and Mate 80 RS (Ultimate Design), each boasting displays ranging from 6.75 inches to 6.90 inches. It demonstrates Huawei's resilience and commitment to delivering user-friendly Technology, even in the face of considerable adversity. This is not merely a clever addition; it’s a testament to the company's ability to adapt and innovate.

The Kirin 9030 series is built on a 5nm process using Brute Force, a method involving multiple etching steps with older DUV machines. Yields are reportedly between 20% and 30%, significantly lower than the 75% achieved with EUV lithography.
