Indonesia blocks high-risk social media for minors

Indonesia has announced a blanket ban on high-risk social media platforms for users under 16, effective from March 28. This move aims to protect children from growing online threats including pornography, cyberbullying, online fraud, and digital addiction.

Government acts to safeguard kids' futures

The decision was made by the Ministry of Communication after acknowledging the increasingly real dangers faced by minors in the digital space. While acknowledging the inconvenience this may cause initially, authorities emphasized that they cannot remain silent while children's futures are at risk.

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid did not provide details on the exact implementation process, which will unfold gradually as affected companies comply fully with existing regulations.

With over 200 million online users, many of them minors, Indonesia has one of the largest Internet-borne populations in Southeast Asia. Authorities are increasingly concerned about the effects of excessive screen time, cybercrime, and harmful content on young users.
