Microsoft unveils next-gen ai productivity tool, copilot tasks
Microsoft continues to refine its artificial intelligence strategy for Windows 11, with Copilot emerging as a highly autonomous and central productivity assistant.
Copilot's capabilities expand
Currently, Copilot can perform multi-step research, data analysis, and even automate tasks within the browser. Its goal is to alleviate repetitive or complex tasks for professionals and businesses, positioning it as a key tool for managing daily work.
Copilot tasks: a unified interface
The new Copilot Tasks consolidates the platform's various agents into a single interface. This functionality allows users to create tasks freely or schedule them, with single or recurring executions in daily, weekly, or monthly cycles.
Three modes of operation
- Researcher: Utilizes OpenAI's deep research model for complex web and work data queries.
- Analyst: Leverages the o3-mini model for real-time Python analysis and execution.
- Auto: Acts as a general agent, capable of combining research, browser automation, and executing tasks from start to finish.
Expected features
Initial tests have shown high-quality results, particularly in generating presentations and web reports. Planned features include email summaries, presentation creation, formal letter writing, and reservation management, among others.
Launch timeline uncertain
Microsoft has not yet announced a formal release date. Some functions are still not fully operational, and Copilot Tasks is expected to expand to all of Windows 11 and the Edge browser in the future, offering system-wide automation.
