Movistar, o2 fiber speeds surpass contracts – up to 50 mbps extra
Users of Movistar and O2 fiber in Spain are reporting significantly faster connection speeds than their subscribed rates, a phenomenon confirmed by the companies themselves. Fiber connections are now routinely achieving 350 Mbps for 300 Mbps plans and 1 Gbps on 600 Mbps and 1 Gbps subscriptions – a boost of at least 50 Mbps.

Telefónica adjusts synchronization profiles amidst competition
The surge in speed is attributed to software-based speed limitations, which previously capped connections based on contractual agreements. Telefónica, the parent company of Movistar and O2, appears to have subtly altered these synchronization profiles. While the underlying hardware capabilities – particularly the router – still dictate the maximum achievable speed, the software now allows for a noticeable increase.
This adjustment comes at a strategic time. The National Markets and Competition Commission (CNMC) has been mandating quarterly speed reports from providers, intensifying competitive pressure. Digi has been actively courting Movistar customers with speed boasts, prompting a response from Telefónica.
The benefit is most pronounced when using a wired Ethernet connection. Wi-Fi, with its inherent overhead, will still see a lesser improvement. The change effectively levels the playing field, providing customers with more bandwidth than they're paying for. This isn't a simple tweak; it represents a deliberate move to enhance perceived value and bolster Telefónica's position in a fiercely competitive market.
The speed increase isn't universal, and dependent on the existing infrastructure. But for those with Movistar or O2 fiber, the upgrade is welcome news. And it signals a broader trend: providers are now prioritizing speed metrics to attract and retain customers, potentially reshaping the customer experience in the Spanish broadband market.
