Reviving an Old Acer Aspire with Linux

Samarveer Singh repurposed a 2019 Acer Aspire laptop, no longer comfortable with Windows 11, into a home server. Instead of investing in a NAS or cloud storage subscription, he utilized existing hardware by installing Zorin OS Lite, a lightweight Linux distribution designed for resource-constrained devices.

Zorin OS Lite Enables Server Functionality

The key to the transformation was switching from Windows to Zorin OS Lite. This allowed the laptop to dedicate its resources to running background services, shifting its purpose from a desktop computer to a continuously connected network device. Specifically, Singh implemented a folder synchronization tool that transfers files directly between devices within the home network, bypassing external platforms like Google Drive or OneDrive.

Immich and Jellyfin Enhance the Setup

Further enhancing the project are Immich and Jellyfin. Immich provides a private alternative to services like Google Photos for managing and storing photographs and videos locally. Jellyfin, a free and open-source media server, transforms the laptop into a personal Netflix, allowing users to stream movies, series, and music stored locally.
