Pixel's at a glance adds sports & finance – but is it worth the battery drain?

Google has finally rolled out long-requested sports and finance tracking to its Pixel phone's At a Glance widget, offering users a convenient glance at market updates and game scores directly on their home screen. This update, arriving after a two-year wait, allows users to customize their widget with real-time information, though not without a potential cost.

Personalized market and sports updates now accessible

The feature, accessible via a long press on the At a Glance widget, lets users select specific sports teams, stocks, and indices to monitor. Users can add and remove tickers through the settings menu, with the option to track up to a watchlist of stocks and indices. However, Google warns that these updates can significantly impact battery life.

Adding a team like the Florida Panthers involves navigating to the Sports section, searching for the team, and selecting 'Follow'. Similarly, adding a stock requires accessing the Finance section, selecting 'Watchlist', and adding symbols. Removing items is a simple tap on the pencil icon within the Watchlist.

The ability to access market data without launching a separate app is a welcome addition, allowing for quick monitoring of portfolio performance or keeping tabs on live games. This functionality, absent since the Pixel 2 XL’s debut in 2017, addresses a long-standing user request. The convenience is undeniable.

At a Glance remains a divisive feature. But for those who embrace it, the added capabilities—particularly the addition of sports and finance—make it a more valuable tool for staying informed.
