Samsung's privacy display: a glimmer of hope or a privacy risk?
The Galaxy S26 Ultra boasts a novel feature: a Privacy display. It’s designed to obscure your screen content from onlookers at oblique angles. But does this innovation truly enhance security, or does it introduce a new layer of vulnerability?

I've personally tested this feature, and the experience is…complicated. Samsung describes the Privacy display as using two types of pixels – narrow and wide – to control screen visibility from the sides. When activated, the wide pixels dim, allowing only the narrow pixels to project the image directly forward. This creates a darkened display when viewed from an angle, supposedly shielding your information.
However, the reality falls short of the ideal. While the display does darken significantly when viewed from a sharp angle, it’s far from impenetrable. Even with the feature maxed out, someone sitting beside you on a train or plane can still discern what’s on your screen.
The angle at which the Privacy display effectively obscures content is so narrow that the image itself becomes distorted, rendering it difficult to see clearly. And, perhaps more concerning, this feature can subtly alter your perception of security. It’s easy to become complacent, assuming a degree of protection that simply isn't there.
Furthermore, the technology introduces an inconsistency in how the phone feels and behaves. When Privacy Display is on, the user experience feels noticeably different than when it’s off. And, unlike standard screen protectors, you can’t simply remove it when it becomes inconvenient. The underlying technology is baked into the display, potentially leading to higher repair costs.
It’s an interesting concept, but the usability issues and potential for overconfidence weigh heavily against its benefits. The cost of this technology could also influence future smartphone designs, prompting other manufacturers, like Apple, to consider similar solutions. The tech itself possesses potential for improvement—perhaps in future iterations—and could serve as a catalyst for innovation in the smartphone industry.
Ultimately, the Galaxy S26 Ultra's Privacy Display reveals a trade-off: a bold attempt at enhanced privacy hampered by practical limitations. It’s a step forward, but not a revolution.
