This has spurred a desire for innovation, and Elon Musk, known for his disruptive ideas, is reportedly responding to that call. SpaceX is reportedly working on a new device that challenges the traditional smartphone concept.
Spacex's reported device: what do we know?
According to multiple sources cited by Reuters, SpaceX is developing a mobile device designed to connect to the Starlink satellite internet constellation. While details remain scarce, the goal is to offer an alternative to existing smartphones. However, Musk quickly clarified on X that it wouldn’t be a smartphone in the conventional sense, stating, “We are not developing a phone.”
Beyond the smartphone: ai and neural nets
Despite denying the “smartphone” label, Musk hasn’t ruled out a Starlink-connected device entirely. In a previous exchange on X, he suggested that such a device would be significantly different from current phones. He envisions a device “optimized purely for running max performance/watt neural nets,” hinting at powerful onboard AI capabilities.
The xai connection: grok and local ai
This focus on AI makes perfect sense given SpaceX’s recent acquisition of xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot. A device that acts as both a Starlink access point and a platform for Grok’s AI processing would be a compelling combination, offering users a powerful and connected experience.

This isn’t SpaceX’s first foray into mobile connectivity. They already collaborate with T-Mobile in the US to provide Starlink internet directly to phones on the carrier’s network. This existing partnership provides a strong foundation for further development in the mobile connectivity space.

SpaceX and xAI aren’t alone in pursuing AI-first devices. OpenAI is working with Jony Ive on a mysterious device, and Apple is reportedly considering an AI pin.
