SpaceX's Ambitious Plan to Challenge Big Telcos with Hybrid Network
SpaceX has reiterated its plans to build a terrestrial network, leveraging existing Starlink internet dishes and spectrum acquired from EchoStar to compete with AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon. While most analysts doubt the practicality of this idea, a few think the company might be onto something.

Unlike traditional mobile networks that rely on cell towers, SpaceX wants to create a hybrid network with some basic terrestrial infrastructure, satellites, and femtocells (small cellular base stations) integrated into Starlink dishes. These dishes would then cast cellular signals across surrounding areas, effectively turning them into micro cell towers.
The company is also preparing to launch its next-generation V2 satellites next year, which will have more satellites and additional capacity to support broadband data and IoT connectivity.
However, many remain skeptical. BNP Paribas Equity Research senior analyst Sam McHugh questions the reliability of femto deployment given Starlink's low broadband penetration. He also doubts the financial viability of SpaceX pouring resources into building a fourth national carrier, considering its capital commitments to data centers and AI chips.
Coverage is another hurdle, with network consultant Paul Rhodes predicting that with femtocells, SpaceX would be able to provide a 3G-like service at best, compared to Starlink's current Direct-to-Cell service being likened to a 2G offering in a 5G world.
While SpaceX's ambitious plan is intriguing, it remains to be seen whether the company can overcome the significant challenges and doubts surrounding its hybrid network strategy.
