As tensions between Iran and the West escalate, Spain has announced it will send its most advanced warship, the Cristóbal Colón, to escort a French aircraft carrier and bolster defense efforts in Cyprus.

The move comes after Iran launched a barrage of drones and missiles in response to a U.S. targeted strike, with Cyprus itself a target. The island nation, a European Union member, lacks air defenses and has appealed for assistance from the bloc.

At the forefront of this response is Spain's Cristóbal Colón, a cutting-edge frigate boasting the NATO-backed AEGIS combat system. This Technology combines sophisticated radar and onboard computers to track and guide missiles over 500 kilometers, making it the ideal vessel to protect the Charles de Gaulle and Cyprus' shores from Iranian threats.

Commissioned in 2010, the 146-meter Cristóbal Colón is the lead ship of the Álvaro de Bazán class and boasts a range of 4,500 kilometers without refueling. Its 216-strong crew is equipped with anti-submarine, anti-surface, and anti-air capabilities, including Harpoon missiles, torpedoes, and a 5-inch cannon.
