Six years, no data loss
The experiment, conducted by a Reddit user named Vance, involved filling several 32GB USB drives with files in 2020 and then storing them without use. Six years later, when the drives were plugged back in, all data remained intact. No bit degradation or corruption was detected.
This challenges a common belief: that data on USB drives quickly deteriorates when not in use. The findings don't apply universally, of course. The test’s limited sample size and controlled storage conditions mean it doesn't guarantee the same results for every USB drive.
The secret lies in the technology itself: flash memory. Unlike traditional hard drives, USB drives use flash memory, composed of microscopic electronic cells that store data as electrical charges. Millions of these cells work together. However, those charges can slowly dissipate over time, potentially leading to data errors.
