Whatsapp readies noise cancellation for android calls

WhatsApp is developing a new feature to automatically filter out background noise during voice and video calls, enhancing conversation clarity. This noise-cancellation function is first expected for androiddevices.

Currently, android doesn't have built-in noise cancellation for WhatsApp, while iOS allows voice isolation controls through the system's audio settings.

With the upcoming android implementation, noise cancellation will activate automatically when starting a call, displaying a visual alert to inform the user the feature is active. Users can toggle it off at any time from the call menu, for instance, if they want to play music or share important ambient sounds.

WhatsApp has already detected this feature in the latest android beta version, with engineers still refining how the app identifies and filters out background noise. Crucially, noise cancellation occurs locally on the device, processing audio before encryption and transmission to maintain the security and privacy of communications.

Once testing is complete, WhatsApp plans to roll out this feature to a broader beta user group before a general release. This update reinforces the app's commitment to offering clearer, more comfortable calls adapted to noisy environments and modern user needs.
