Windows 11 dark mode gets a boost, but not everywhere yet

Windows 11's long-awaited dark mode is seeing further development, a welcome update for users who have clamored for the feature for years. But progress remains uneven, with several system areas still lacking the sleek aesthetic.

Microsoft refines dark mode implementation

Marcus Ash, Windows' current design and research lead, recently confirmed via X (formerly Twitter) that the team is actively working to expand dark mode across the operating system. “We’re driving our tools and techniques to bring the dark theme to more areas of Windows,” he stated.

The focus is on improving existing panels and dialogs to achieve greater visual consistency. Currently, some traditional interfaces, such as file properties in File Explorer, the Run window, Device Manager, and Disk Management, remain stubbornly light.

This isn’t the first attempt at a dark mode in Windows. A rudimentary version debuted in 2016, but updates have been infrequent – until now. The current approach prioritizes efficiency and adaptability, allowing for quicker integration of the dark theme into future interface elements.

The open communication from Microsoft has been well-received by the user community, a stark contrast to previous quiet development cycles. While a fully dark Windows 11 remains a work in progress, the direction is clear: a more unified and visually appealing operating system is on the horizon. This iterative approach signals a commitment to a more cohesive user experience.
