For years, Windows users have wanted to customize the name of their user profile folder. Now, Microsoft is finally letting them – and the process is surprisingly straightforward.

The user folder, located within the Windows 11 directory structure, has long been a non-modifiable element. Changing its name was a restricted area, deeply embedded within the operating system's core architecture. Modifying it could corrupt the system, affecting registry paths, SID identifiers, and various system links.
Microsoft had hinted at a potential solution in the past, but the workaround was overly complex, requiring advanced command-line knowledge. Now, with recent Insider Preview builds (26300.8068 and 26220.8062), a native option has emerged, accessible directly through the initial setup (OOBE).
