Xiaomi has expanded its
ecosystem with the launch of the Xiaomi Watch 5, a smartwatch packing a notable new feature: an electromyography (EMG) sensor. This marks the return of the brand to Google’s Wear OS platform, integrating features like Google Wallet and Gemini.Emg technology ushers in a new era of gesture control
The standout innovation is the EMG sensor, which measures electrical activity from muscles to interpret hand gestures. Users can now perform actions like double-pinching fingers to end calls or flicking wrists for controls – a feature already found on Apple and Samsung devices, though Xiaomi claims superior sensitivity.
Beyond gesture control, the watch can potentially analyze muscle fatigue during workouts, offering insights into recovery needs. However, this functionality is not yet available.

Wear os integration brings familiar features
The move to Wear OS means users gain access to Google services such as Google Maps, Google Wallet, and the Gemini assistant. A richer app ecosystem, accessible via the Google Play Store, further enhances the device's capabilities. Even without pairing with a Xiaomi phone, the watch functioned as a remote shutter for the camera.
The 1.54-inch display is housed in a polished stainless steel case protected by sapphire glass on both the front and back. Two side buttons—one for the app menu/digital crown and another for quick workout access—complete the design.
Battery life: a trade-off for enhanced functionality?
While the previous Xiaomi Watch 3S relied on the company's HyperOS for extended battery life, the switch to Wear OS inevitably impacts endurance. Xiaomi promises up to 6 days of battery life with standard use, extending to 18 days with endurance mode enabled—claims yet to be verified.
The Xiaomi Watch 5 is available immediately in Europe for €299. A European launch is confirmed, but there's no word on a release in the United States.
